New additions to the family.

We love this time of year, new life and all that, and it’s something we really believe in our children having a good understanding of. The last couple of years we have hatched ducks in our incubator and it’s been such fun.

This year we decided to ring the changes and hatch a dozen quail, the eggs as usual are from ebay, we’ve had pretty good results so far.

My son, is very excited and couldn’t wait to pop them in the incubator, and then make a little wish that they all hatch safely, with a kiss goodnight.

So in approximately 16 days we should have some baby quail, and a further 6-8 weeks after that lots of quail eggs for recipes……I’m thinking mini scotch eggs.

  1. Amazing that you can buy quail’s eggs on ebay! What a lovely thing to do with your son. I’m not going to let my daughter see this post or she’ll be getting ideas……having a break from keeping poultry here – and I thought I was going to keep chickens forever – I was besotted for about five years!

    • Yes we did the same with duck eggs the last couple of years. It’s great fun.
How come you’re not keeping chickens anymore then? Fancy a go with quail?

  3. I’ve hatched and raised ducks and they are brilliant – like mini dinosaurs with yellow feathers! I have some friends round the corner who’s son has quails – they are less hardy than ducks and chicken. I do love your sentiments though – mini Scotch eggs! Excellent 😉

…and I think this is wonderful thing for children (and adults) – so many people now think that eggs come from a supermarket!

  4. Thank you, can’t take the credit for this one though, my wife took it on her mobile, just goes to show how catching the moment can give the best pics.
